Happy Birthday Mummy!

That's the greeting I received this morning in conjunction with breakfast in bed on the toilet. Luckily enough, Brandon had the good sense to keep my delicious, homemade sausage egg "Mc"muffins out of the bathroom when he realized where I was, but my two year old unashamedly barged in and presented me with my cards whilst I voided my bladder first thing after waking up. And I got a heartfelt "Good job, Mummy!" upon flushing. No better way to start the Day 'o' Mothers.
She never ceases to make me laugh - a trait she inherited from her father. Lately when she gets excited, her big blue eyes get even bigger and the look is hilarious. We may not take tender mother daughter photos together, and truth be told, I haven't taken a "cute" photo that I'd happily send to her great grandmas to show off to their friends in almost two years, but she's too funny to be cutesy. And that suits us just fine. I hope she always maintains a good sense of humour and we as parents always encourage her to find the funny in life and in herself. It sure makes life a lot more bearable. Elder Richard G. Scott said it best:
"A good sense of humor is an escape valve for the pressures of life."
Brandon didn't let me lift a finger all day, which was all I really wanted for Mother's Day. Funny how all I want on a day to celebrate what I do is take a break from what I do. A whole day off is forthcoming, but things seem to be so (uncharacteristically) busy lately that there isn't time for it until we get back from our month long trip to Canada (hooray!) I love my little family but I can't wait to bask in the quiet of the library, reading, writing and laughing at other people's kids. And eating out in silence. Complete silence - I've forgotten what that sounds like.
That said, there's nothing I'd rather be doing on a day to day basis. We don't do anything grandiose or terribly exciting during our days together, but it's such a blessing to be able to be in the details of her daily life. My little shadow brushes her teeth with me - and even helps me at times, dances with me, sings with me, reads with me, snuggles with me and kindly reminds me when I'm spending too much time texting (yelling "NO PHONE, MUMMY!" with the grumpiest expression she can muster). Sometimes the days can be long, but I know that the years will fly by, so I'm doing my best to enjoy each moment as it passes.
Every day, but especially on Mother's Day, I think about my wonderful Mum and how selflessly she gave of her time and energy to raise my siblings and I and how much she continues to do for us. I think of my lovely Grandmas who raised my parents to be the loving, caring, capable adults they became in order to provide the best life possible for us. I think of my awesome Mother-in-Law who gave birth (a feat in itself) to my charming husband and steered him to become a loving husband and father. So many wonderful women in my life and I'm grateful for each one.
If all goes according to plan, this will be the last Mother's Day we celebrate with just my Teagan. The last two and a half years have flown by - just like everyone said they would. Brandon and I were discussing the fact that even though she's been ours for that long, there are times when you look at her and she looks back at you and you feel a rush of emotion, realizing that this sweet (and sometimes sour), innocent, beautiful, trusting, forgiving little thing has been entrusted to me in this life to raise and teach and love. An overwhelming prospect, to be sure, but one that I am not alone in and receive help from above and from family and friends and with that, I can be confident that we can find lasting happiness as a family in this life and in the eternities. Happy Mother's Day!
