Date Night at Disney on Ice

We decided to be uncharasterically fun parents tonight and took Teagan to Disney on Ice Rockin' Ever After tonight. I'd been planning to take Mason and practicing my Moby wrapping skills to be able to wear him - in hopes that it would go better than the last time I wore him at the dinner table...dripping sauce on his head. I was discussing our plans at the park and my sweet friend volunteered to watch Mason so we could actually enjoy the show. And thank goodness she did - he wouldn't have slept through any of it.
As is tradition for our family, plans never seem to go...as planned. Teagan was playing at a friend's house and came home late, in my friend's shirt as a dress. Not because she had an accident, as I had assumed, but because her friend had decided to play with the hose. So we got her dressed - no small feat these days and hopped in the car to drop Mason off a few minutes late. Apparently Teagan had played pretty hard, because she was whiny and cranky and tired and complained that Mason wasn't with us. I tried to explain that we were having a special date night with Mummy and Daddy but she was extremely concerned that we'd forgotten Mason. So much for special treatment. For better or worse (it was a bit of both) she fell asleep in the car, just in time for us to hit major traffic on the way to the show. We debated back and forth about where to park and wound up waiting in a line of cars at one light four times, just to park in the free lot which felt like miles away. Teagan woke up in a fog and we had to carry her, practically running, getting to our seats with seconds to spare.
We went on opening night when the tickets were cheap and so did all sorts of characters. We were fortunate enough to sit in front of the world's classiest family, yelling over the music, "singing" along, leaving to smoke at intermission, stinking of beer and leaving their daughter unattended while they left to finish their cigarettes. They detracted from the magic a little, but the show did not disappoint. It featured Ariel, Rapunzel, Merida and Belle and their stories - ones Teagan is familiar with. She was freaked out at first, mostly because we were surrounded very closely by complete strangers, so she sat on our laps (in spite of having a seat to herself) and was mesmerized for most of it. Watching her watch the show was worth every penny we spent on the cheap, opening night, nosebleed seats.
And just to seal our status as awesome parents, we threw caution to the wind and picked up sundaes on the way home from picking up Mason. Again, I saw things going differently, but Teagan was up WAY past bedtime and was therefore ridiculously volatile. Does this look like the face of a girl who just got back from an evening of Disney Princesses, ice, alone time with parents and ice cream at 10:00? You wouldn't think so, but that's what ours looks like. No wonder we don't get out much.
