Down 'n' Derby

We're Cub Scout Leaders in our ward, and as such, attended their Pinewood Derby on the 11th. Because our ward is small, we were encouraged to bring our own cars and race as well, to make it more exciting for the boys.
So instead of actually putting in some effort and building our own cars, we did what all smart people do when faced with a challenge: we called Mom. Bless Brenda's heart, she still had Brandon's Pinewood Derby cars from his Cub Scout days tucked safely away for an occasion such as this and mailed them to us. Brandon gave me first choice, between the truck (modeled after his dad's old one, complete with license plate number) or the camouflage tank. I didn't feel manly enough for the latter, so I chose the former. And lost.
I included a deceptive photo - though I'm confessing said deception - in that my truck looks as though it crossed the finish line before Brandon's tank, when in fact, his vehicle had already crossed and was bouncing back. His car was clocked at 6.15 mph, mine at 5.93 mph. There, I admit it. But for those of you who are just looking at the photos, you'll think I was victorious. And when it came to spirit, I was indeed victorious - I was awarded the "Most Spirited Sideliner" award. Mum, are you proud? Basically, during the awkward silence between races and heats, I rounded up the scouts and forced them to cheer against their will. What can I say? I was born to cheer.
We thought Brandon would take home the "Most Ancient Vehicle" award, but he was trumped by one Steve Roeth, whose car had a few years on Brandons. Great minds think alike, though, I guess.
There were cute refreshments and the boys had plenty of fun and lots of spectators - the turnout was impressive.
Teagan had fun waving her flag at the beginning and sweeping the gym floor at the end. Not a lot of fun was had in the middle, as we were constantly holding her back from touching the equipment, but it ended on a good note. My first Pinewood Derby was a success and I'd like to say that I'm looking forward to my second one in about 8 years, but we'll most likely just try to pass off the tank as Junior's when the day comes.
