There are a myriad of things I could have done for Hallowee'en with a belly the size of mine, but in an attempt to be a better mother than I've been in months, I acquiesced to Teagan's request that we dress as characters from the hit (cough, annoying, cough) kids' show Yo Gabba Gabba, her latest obsession.
She's very dedicated to her craft and has assumed the role of Foofa with every fiber of her being. She corrects me if I call her Teagan and says, "No, I Foofa." Well excuuuuse me! She's assigned me to be Muno, the 6 foot red cyclops - still not sure why. On more than one occasion she has gone to ask me something and started with "Mummy" only to correct herself and call me Muno instead. Really, Mummy would be fine. And Brandon is Plex, the magic robot.
We have a CD in the car and if one of us tries to sing the part of another character, we get a stern talking to and are reminded of who should actually be singing. One of my personal favourites, "Don't Bite Your Friends" involves Muno biting Foofa, and poor, wounded Foofa sulks in the corner while everyone else sings to Muno about not biting your friends. We were driving the other day and I glanced in the rearview mirror to see Teagan near tears. I asked her numerous times what was the matter, tried to pat her leg and nearly pulled over because she was so non-responsive and then all of a sudden she was her usual cheery self. Strange, I thought. Then it happened again and I noticed the lyrics of the song. She was sulking, until Muno apologizes and then Foofa feels better and says "it's okay." Talk about your drama queens. One day, she may make us a lot of money. Until then, she'll toy with my emotions and give me an ulcer.
In spite of the fact that I was 12 hours from having a baby, we got dolled up and headed to our ward's Trunk or Treat as four fifths of the Yo Gabba Gabba Gang. Mum (behind the camera) was a great sport and donned a Brobee hat similar to ours. She's a good woman, but wisely refused to be photographed. In hindsight, I should have done the same.

Mum and I held down the fort over at the Odyssey (come tomorrow I won't feel quite so ridiculous driving it around) while Plex and Foofa made the rounds, visiting Harry Potter and Doc McStuffins to name a few.
They resisted the urge to beg candy from the same people twice (which can't be said for many of the kids there) and still came out of it with a bag so full she could barely lift it.
Once the Trunk or Treat was over, we headed home for Teagan to empty her bag and hit the pavement again in our neighbourhood. Like her parents, once she got home she was comfortable and didn't want to get dressed again to leave. It took more than a little prodding and bribery, but Brandon managed to convince her to head out with her little friend Livi to procure more candy - it didn't seem like quite enough to rot our teeth. I stayed behind with Mum to prepare for The Big Day. So while I shaved my legs and packed a hospital bag (which I'd been meaning to do for weeks), my sweet Mum studied her nursing textbooks and answered the door every few seconds to hand out candy. Eventually it got to be annoying and we sat the bowl outside with a sign that said "Please take ONE." Whether people heeded the request I know not, but once the candy was gone it was gone.
Teagan returned victorious and happy, proving the evening a success - what's not for a three year old to love about Halloween? And I managed to make more than a few people laugh. Some recognized me, others didn't. But they all chuckled and/or did a doubletake. But who will be laughing tomorrow? I suppose that depends on the drugs they give me. Happy Hallowe'en!
