I was a little overwhelmed when left on my own with two kids. Okay, a lot overwhelmed. My sweet mother-in-law was kind enough to fly out to visit and help me transition to two. She brought something unexpected in her carry-on. My sister-in-law, Tara! I drove to pick Brenda up at the airport and on my way to meet her, Tara appeared from behind her. I was so excited! They tag teamed all the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, playing and snuggling. It was glorious. Tara, my amazing sister-in-law who has 5 children of her own (you'd never have guessed it, which is why I mention it) arranged for help with her kids so she could help me take care of mine. A saint. She is an amazing cook and planned a whole menu for her visit, which was wonderful. I insisted she leave her recipes with me and hope to pass them off as my own one day. Don't tell. Tara stayed with us a few days and went to church with Brandon when I wasn't up to it, painted Teagan's nails and allowed Teagan to do the same, and helped me learn patience. She really is an amazing example of patience and love with her children and if she could stay a few more years, I might actually be able to mimic her. Alas, she was needed at home but I was so glad she came. Best surprise ever!
Mom was so wonderful - there 100% for the kids and I. She was kind enough to help me take care of Mason after a particularly traumatic experience at the doctor. She painted nails as well and had hers painted (I'm not ready so I was glad Teagan got so many chances with them!) and cooked after Tara left. She has a soft spot for Brandon (though truth be told, anyone would think they were her favourite after visiting with her for any length of time) and made him Cinnamon Twists, a beloved recipe from his childhood that I'm entirely too lazy to entertain, and even let Teagan help. If I've learned anything from the Richards women, it's that I need to be a little less uptight in the kitchen and allow my daughter to help while she still wants to. Okay, I've learned a lot more than that, but we don't have the time.
We even got to out on a date while Mom stayed home and snuggled. We saw Catching Fire and while it was a good movie, I think I could have watched anything besides Yo Gabba Gabba and been thrilled.
I married into an incredible family and am so appreciative of their help, love and support. Thanks, ladies!
